What gear do I need when starting BJJ?

The ultimate Bad Boy BJJ shopping guide!

It’s the big day! You have survived through your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class and you actually liked it? You are wondering what gear you would need to perform through your weekly trainings? You have come to the right place my friend, Bad Boy got you covered! We take care of all Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners, from the beginner to the World Champion. In this article, we will give you some tips on how to choose the correct gear for you, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu beginner, whether you plan to train from time to time or to quickly get into competing.

Get a BJJ Gi.

The first and most important item you have to choose is your BJJ Gi. If you are on a budget and close to the competition weight limit, go for the Bad Boy Training Series Defender BJJ Gi. At Bad Boy, affordable does not mean cheap. The Training Series Defender Gi is made of ultra-lightweight 350 gsm pearl weave cotton, it is pre-shrunk (size does not change after you wash it for the first time – all Bad Boy Gis are pre-shrunk) and it has triple stitching on all stress points.

Even though you have just started rolling, competition can be in your mind already. BJJ white belts do compete like other BJJ belt colors. Competing will make you improve your game much faster. If this is something already in your mind when getting your first Bad Boy Gi, then go for the Bad Boy Pro Series Champion BJJ Gi. This is the best Bad Boy Gi for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors. As its name suggests, it is used by the Bad Boy BJJ Team when competing. The cotton fabric of this Gi is a little denser than the Training Series Defender Gi, it is 450 gsm pearl weave. This higher density means it is made to last through a lot of competitions and training sessions! You also have a wider variety of colors available for the Pro Series Champion Gi: White, Blue or Black.

You want to wear the finest Bad Boy BJJ Gi? The Bad Boy Legacy Master BJJ Gi is a Gi that you will keep during most of your BJJ life (assuming you will roll for many years). It is worth the price if you don’t give up during your first year (who does?). 550 gsm gold weave cotton, 10oz rip stop pants, what could we have done more? It will resist many years and no one will look better than you on the mats.

Rash guard

You will eventually need to wear a rash guard during your BJJ training. Why? Because you will sweat a lot during training and the Bad Boy Rash Guards will deal with most of the sweat before it soils the Gi. This way you would feel more comfortable not being soaked 10 minutes after the beginning of the class. You will also need to use a rash guard when attending a No Gi training or a Grappling session, which is something to have in mind.

Cup/groin guard

Protect your genitals at all time, that is the rule. You can never prevent a foot, a knee or an elbow to accidentally land where you don’t want it to land. Not everybody does and some mates will tell you that the groin guard bothers them. We strongly advise to wear one.

Ear guard

Depending on how your ears react to constant rubbing, you may get cauliflower ears at some point. If this is important to you to preserve your ears from looking different (or like Alexander Gustafsson’s) you should wear an ear protector.

Fight shorts

To complete your No Gi/Grappling outfit you will need fight shorts.

Knee pads

If your skin is rather thin and sensitive and you see scabs on your knees after training, you should get knee pads. Your knees will thank you. You can wear them under your Gi or naked during No Gi/Grappling training.

Grappling socks

Martial arts mats are bacteria oceans. We sweat, bleed, and lose hairs and skin on these mats. If your skin happens to be sensitive to bacteria, especially the skin of your feet that will be in contact with these bacteria most of the time, then it is recommended to wear grappling socks during training. Don’t wear your regular sports socks when training, they will rip off.

Mouth guard

Not everybody wears a mouth guard either when rolling but tongue biting happens so we strongly advise beginners to wear one.

Bags

Where are you going to fit all this gear? Get a dedicated sports bag for your Jiu Jitsu gear. Get a bag that is big enough to fit all your gear, a water bottle, a snack and flip flops to wear from the locker room to the mat.

Don’t forget to take all your gear out of the bag when you come home. Wash everything (except the knee pads, ear guard and groin guard) before going to the next session. If you want to train every day and can’t get your Gi washed and dried overnight, you should buy two Gis.
