In this article, we will give you some tips on how to choose the correct gear for you, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu beginner, whether you plan to train from time to time or to quickly get into competing.
The first and most important item you have to choose is your BJJ Gi. If you are on a budget and close to the competition weight limit, go for the Bad Boy Training Series Defender BJJ Gi. You will eventually need to wear a rash guard during your BJJ training. Why? Because you will sweat a lot during training and the Bad Boy Rash Guards will deal with most of the sweat before it soils the Gi. This way you would feel more comfortable not being soaked 10 minutes after the beginning of the class. You will also need to use a rash guard when attending a No Gi training or a Grappling session, which is something to have in mind.

Protect your genitals at all time, that is the rule. You can never prevent a foot, a knee or an elbow to accidentally land where you don’t want it to land. Not everybody does and some mates will tell you that the groin guard bothers them. We strongly advise to wear one.
Depending on how your ears react to constant rubbing, you may get cauliflower ears at some point. If this is important to you to preserve your ears from looking different (or like Alexander Gustafsson’s) you should wear an ear protector.
To complete your No Gi/Grappling outfit you will need fight shorts.
If your skin is rather thin and sensitive and you see scabs on your knees after training, you should get knee pads. Your knees will thank you. You can wear them under your Gi or naked during No Gi/Grappling training.
Martial arts mats are bacteria oceans. We sweat, bleed, and lose hairs and skin on these mats. If your skin happens to be sensitive to bacteria, especially the skin of your feet that will be in contact with these bacteria most of the time, then it is recommended to wear grappling socks during training. Don’t wear your regular sports socks when training, they will rip off.
Not everybody wears a mouth guard either when rolling but tongue biting happens so we strongly advise beginners to wear one.
Where are you going to fit all this gear? Get a dedicated sports bag for your Jiu Jitsu gear. Get a bag that is big enough to fit all your gear, a water bottle, a snack and flip flops to wear from the locker room to the mat.
Don’t forget to take all your gear out of the bag when you come home. Wash everything (except the knee pads, ear guard and groin guard) before going to the next session. If you want to train every day and can’t get your Gi washed and dried overnight, you should buy two Gis.
